MEDICAL WASTE TREATMENT AND STERILIZATION: HERE IS THE MADE IN ITALY WSSD CREATED BY CISA PRODUCTION

The new technology that allows to treat and sterilise medical waste, especially that at high risk of infection, is one hundred per cent Made in Italy. The system is designed to operate directly within the hospital itself, in a safe, simplified (as far as logistics are concerned) and economically and environmentally sustainable way. This is the "Waste Sterilization Services Department" (WSSD) sterilization system for the treatment of medical waste, created by CISA, the international company based in Lucca which has been designing and manufacturing sterilization products and systems for over 70 years with cutting edge technology for hospital, laboratory and pharmaceutical applications. This new solution is all the more necessary today, with the intensification of the Covid-19 pandemic emergency, which has already recorded a considerable increase in the production of hazardous medical waste at high infectious risk in Italy and worldwide.

Already widely installed and used by CISA internationally, the medical waste treatment system was just recently presented at the Fiera del Levante in Bari, during the 4th Mediterranean Healthcare Forum 2020.

This was also the occasion to present the analysis carried out by Pricewaterhouse Coopers’ (PWC) research department, directed by Sandro Bicocchi, on the issue of hazardous medical waste and the impact it has on operating costs, with a study on savings for hospital facilities resulting from the use of these new waste disposal technologies.

The presentation of the "Waste Sterilization Services Department" system also provided an opportunity to introduce the Sterili-Station, the new mobile solution for the treatment of medical waste, which can be introduced more rapidly in hospitals, where time is essential and saving on economic resources has now become a crucial factor in reducing healthcare costs.

“"The Sterili-Station”, explains CISA's CEO, Antonio Veronesi, "is a mobile container with a central unit for the treatment of medical waste. It is solution with significant benefits from both an economic and environmental point of view, because it addresses the main problems that hospital facilities have to face: the storage of hospital waste at risk of infection, the transfer to dedicated treatment centres (there are few in Italy), the high disposal costs. The "Waste Sterilization Services Department" sterilization system provides an effective solution to the needs of the healthcare industry, placing three strategic factors at the centre of the whole process: high safety for staff and for the entire hospital facility; environmental protection, thanks to a mechanism with less impact on the environment; and logistical and economic simplification, with a process that is easier to manage and less expensive”.

“The considerable benefit for hospitals that adopt the CISA system - concludes Veronesi - lies not only in a drastic reduction in transport and treatment costs, but also in a clear logistical simplification. In fact, while hazardous medical waste, collected as such every day, has to be sent mostly for incineration at most every five days, with this on-site sterilisation plant it is possible to store inerted material for up to three months”.
